Another World<\/h2>\n

(1994-95)<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s five twenty-eight a.m. when I exit through the double glass doors of my apartment building.\u00a0 <\/span>The cold January air stings my face as I descend the front stairs, but I take my time in the hopes I\u2019ll run into one of my neighbors, perhaps an early morning dog walker, so I can wave at them before slipping into the back seat of the black sedan.\u00a0 <\/span>But it\u2019s so dang early no-one\u2019s around.\u00a0 <\/span>This is the first time Another World<\/i> has sent a car to bring me to the studio.\u00a0 <\/span>Usually, I take the D train on these ungodly early mornings way out to the far reaches of Brooklyn and barring any unforeseen subway glitches I\u2019ll be there in ninety minutes if I\u2019m lucky.\u00a0 <\/span>I relax into the backseat, close my eyes, and breathe a sigh of relief.\u00a0 <\/span>Fifty minutes later I\u2019m at the studio.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I drop my bag in my dressing room and head over to hair and make-up.\u00a0 <\/span>Sitting in the make-up chair still a little bleary-eyed deep in thought, I gaze at my blurry reflection in the mirror.\u00a0 <\/span>My once long brown hair is now short and red.\u00a0 <\/span>I was so devastated when my husband left that out of defiance I cut all my hair off and dyed it red.\u00a0 <\/span>Marcia Clark, the head prosecutor on the O.J. Simpson murder case recently, out of desperation I presume and due to all the negative press surrounding her looks, permed her hair.\u00a0 <\/span>I once permed my hair\u2014it was a disaster and I don\u2019t care for it on Marcia either.\u00a0 <\/span>It takes away from her authority, giving her a somewhat comedic appearance. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My character on Another World<\/i>, Alyse Brenner, is a prosecuting attorney like Marcia, only I\u2019m working on a child custody case.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m modeling my character after Marcia and tell myself I\u2019m watching the trial for research, but the truth is, I\u2019m fascinated by the trial and mesmerized by this remarkable tenacious take-no-prisoners woman.\u00a0 <\/span>Marcia\u2019s been in the DA\u2019s office for thirteen years, and this is her twenty-first murder trial. There she is swimming in a sea of sharks dressed in fancy suits with smug attitudes strutting around the courtroom like they\u2019re God\u2019s gift and she doesn\u2019t put up with any of their BS. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Turns out Marcia and I are kindred spirits. When she was young she lived in New York City and was an aspiring actress.\u00a0 <\/span>She\u2019s now 40-years old, like me, and currently going through a nasty divorce, also like me.\u00a0 <\/span>And on top of the huge pressure from this high profile murder trial, she has two small children at home she\u2019s responsible for.\u00a0 <\/span>I, on the other hand, am just trying to pay my rent.\u00a0 <\/span>I can\u2019t imagine what she\u2019s going through, but my thoughts are interrupted when the make-up artist hands me a business card and in hushed tones explains confidentially,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis doctor\u2019s done everybody\u2019s eyes on the show.\u00a0 <\/span>He even did Goldie Hawn\u2019s eyes.\u00a0 <\/span>Go see him.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I take the card, head back to my dressing room, and stash it in my wallet.\u00a0 <\/span>Once dressed in my navy blue suit and peach blouse I head to set for another day of defending my clients’ right to keep custody of their adopted daughter.\u00a0 <\/span>At one point out of frustration, my client jumps up and yells at the Judge.\u00a0 <\/span>I jump up to reassure him, \u201cLet me handle this Charles.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Then trying to smooth things over I say, \u201cMy client is under a tremendous strain, Your Honor.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve not forgotten that Mr. Riviera (the child\u2019s birth father) kidnapped Luisa (the child in question) and lied about it to the court-appointed social worker.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>But it seems, like Marcia, no matter what I say or do the case isn\u2019t going well for me or my clients. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After my scene\u2019s done I stop by the production office to say hello and pick up my next script.\u00a0 <\/span>The perky blond production assistant tells me, \u201cHey, the producers like you a lot.\u00a0 <\/span>They want to expand your part.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cReally?\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s fantastic.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>I say, overjoyed at my good fortune.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s face it I\u2019ve been knocking around as an actor in New York City for twelve years.\u00a0 <\/span>For the last ten I\u2019ve done tons of extra, under-fives, and day player parts on the soaps, and now at long last, I have a recurring principal part on Another World.<\/i><\/p>\n

<\/i>Gazing at my reflection in the bathroom mirror I figure maybe I do need an eye job\u2013I might as well go see the doctor.\u00a0 <\/span>During our consultation, I watch as he opens the top right drawer of his large oak desk, pulls out his sketchpad, and begins drawing my eyes.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cYou know,\u201d he says.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cYour eyes are your most distinctive feature.\u00a0 <\/span>You have Betty Davis eyes,\u201d he chuckles.\u00a0 <\/span>We chat for about an hour, and he tells me, \u201cYou don\u2019t have normal eyes so if any doctor says you can have a regular eye job, you should run for the hills.\u00a0 <\/span>But don\u2019t worry.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ll do a great job and have you back on camera in three days, and no one will be the wiser.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cGreat,\u201d I say, but secretly I\u2019m terrified. \u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

And it\u2019s odd, but I haven\u2019t heard from Another <\/i>World\u00a0<\/em>to book my next day of work. \u00a0However, every day<\/span>\u00a0without fail I watch the O.J. Simpson trial on Court TV for pointers on my character, of course.\u00a0 <\/span>One afternoon at 2 p.m. I switch from Court TV over to NBC so I can see what\u2019s going on over at Another World, <\/i>but instead of finding Bay City, the fictional town where Another World\u00a0<\/i>takes place, I discover the O.J. Simpson trial.\u00a0 <\/span>I immediately switch to ABC and there it is again.\u00a0 <\/span>Quickly I change to CBS and to my shock and dismay all three channels are carrying the trial. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Seems I\u2019m not the only person riveted to Court TV.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0Turns out<\/span>\u00a0ninety-one percent of the viewing audience is glued to the tube watching the trial of the century.\u00a0 And b<\/span>ecause of ratings, all three major networks turned their daytime schedule over to the O.J. trial.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cDon\u2019t panic,\u201d I tell myself\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThis can\u2019t go on forever.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDamn it,\u201d I scream at the TV.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI finally get a part and it\u2019s preempted by O.J. Simpson!\u00a0 O.J. d<\/span>o you have to take up all the airtime?\u00a0 <\/span>You\u2019ve had four successful careers: football star, sportscaster, Hertz Rent A Car guy, bad movie actor, and now accused murderer.\u00a0 <\/span>Okay, dude, your days are numbered.\u00a0 <\/span>My phone not ringing, I\u2019m unemployed so I\u2019ve got lots of time and I\u2019m going to win this case and put your sorry ass behind bars where you belong.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Suddenly, Marcia Clark appears in the courtroom wearing a red suit with a really short skirt.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cMarcia, What are you doing?\u00a0 <\/span>You don\u2019t wear red on camera.\u00a0 <\/span>And that skirt\u2019s ridiculous.\u00a0 <\/span>And that friggin\u2019 permed hair makes you look by a clown.\u00a0 <\/span>You need a makeover.\u00a0 <\/span>I was supposed to have a makeover.\u00a0 <\/span>An eye job.\u00a0 <\/span>But all that disappeared because of this stupid trial.\u00a0 <\/span>So step aside Marcia.\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s a new Sheriff in town.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m gonna put on my classic navy blue suit, which is what you should be wearing, <\/i>and win this trial.\u201d<\/p>\n

Day after day, month after month, along with the rest of America, I watch and analyze the witnesses and evidence, and become one with the proceedings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMarcia, that guy\u2019s an airhead\u2026Brian \u2018Kato\u2019 Katlin..whatever his name is\u2026surfer\/actor\/permanent house guest, dude. Marcia, are you kidding me?\u00a0 <\/span>Get him off the stand\u2026and stop flirting with Chris Darden?\u00a0 <\/span>Just stop it.\u00a0 <\/span>You\u2019re on national TV.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWait\u2026what\u2019s O.J. doing?\u00a0 <\/span>Are you kidding me!\u00a0 <\/span>Are you kidding me, Marcia?\u00a0 <\/span>Why is he trying on the glove?\u00a0 <\/span>Why did you allow that?\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus, he\u2019s got his fingers splayed.\u00a0 <\/span>No one puts on a glove like that.\u00a0 <\/span>\u2018It\u2019s too tight.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s too tight.\u00a0 <\/span>They don\u2019t fit.\u2019\u00a0 <\/span>Of course, it doesn\u2019t fit.\u00a0 <\/span>It shrank.\u00a0 <\/span>Marcia, you need to tell them.\u00a0 <\/span>Come on.\u00a0 <\/span>You need to say, \u201cIt\u2019s been bled on, and wet, and frozen and unfrozen\u2026leather shrinks, and nothing goes over latex.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf it doesn\u2019t fit.\u00a0 <\/span>You must acquit.\u201d \u00a0“Shut up, Johnny!” I holler at the TV.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd this LAPD dude, this Mark Fuhrman guy who discovered the bloody glove.\u00a0 <\/span>He\u2019s a racist, Marcia.\u00a0 <\/span>They have him on tape.\u00a0 Why<\/span>\u00a0didn\u2019t you vet him?\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m mean, what the hell\u2019s going on over there?\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

DNA evidence?\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s your rebuttal?\u00a0 <\/span>Big yawn, Marcia.\u00a0 <\/span>Nobody knows what DNA evidence is.\u00a0 <\/span>And your expert witness, Fung, Fong\u2014whatever his name is.\u00a0 <\/span>Could he be any more boring?\u00a0 <\/span>The jury\u2019s asleep, Marcia.\u00a0 <\/span>A-sleep.\u00a0 <\/span>The trial\u2019s over.\u00a0 <\/span>You lost.\u00a0 <\/span>It doesn\u2019t matter anymore.\u00a0 <\/span>It doesn\u2019t matter that they found O.J.s blood on the back gate and Nicole and Ron\u2019s blood in his white Bronco, leading up the path to his house, and on his socks.\u00a0 <\/span>Nobody gives a shit, Marcia.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s too late.\u00a0 <\/span>The race card\u2019s been played.\u00a0 <\/span>That trial\u2019s over, baby.\u00a0 <\/span>Payback for Rodney King. \u00a0And with that, I turn off the trial of the century and refuse to watch.\u00a0 <\/span>And that trial goes on for almost nine months. \u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Marcia lost, but I don\u2019t feel too bad for her.\u00a0 <\/span>She did get a 4.5 million dollar book deal to tell your side of the story.\u00a0 <\/span>And during this entire trial\u2014this entire almost nine months I never heard one peep from Another World.\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>And my little non-contract reoccurring prosecuting attorney principal part I loved and needed so badly simply disappeared back into the immortal ooze from which it came. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sitting on my antique Victorian cinnamon velvet couch I bought for twenty-five dollars back in 1974 I feel panic start to set in.\u00a0 <\/span>It rises up and grabs me, \u201cHow ya gonna pay your rent?\u00a0 <\/span>Huh?\u00a0 <\/span>You\u2019re gonna be homeless.\u00a0 <\/span>Living in a cardboard box on the streets of Manhattan.\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s where you\u2019re gonna be.\u00a0 <\/span>You\u2019re alone.\u00a0 <\/span>Over forty.\u00a0 <\/span>Unemployed.\u00a0 <\/span>Your life is over.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Biting my nails my mind spins, \u201cShut up.\u00a0 <\/span>Shut up.\u00a0 <\/span>Shut up.\u00a0 <\/span>Who asked you?\u00a0 <\/span>Go back to hell where you belong.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Oh God, maybe my ex was right, I should have been an accountant.\u00a0 <\/span>The panic turns into fear and the fear turns into heat.\u00a0 <\/span>And the heat travels like a blow torch up my spine and explodes out the top of my head. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And then it hits me. Of course, why didn\u2019t I think of that?\u00a0 <\/span>I head over to my desk that overlooks the Museum of Natural History where the blue sky, trees, green grass, and daffodils comfort me. Pull out the special envelop from Citibank which houses the magical predatory checks and, for the second month in a row, write a check to my landlord to pay my rent. \u00a0I place the check into the envelope, address it, and breathe a sigh of relief. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Next, I take out my postcards and begin writing, \u201cDear So and So, I\u2019ve completed my recurring part on Another World<\/i> so I\u2019m available for work.\u00a0 <\/span>Please keep me in mind.\u00a0 <\/span>Thanks so much, Jill.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Then I head into my kitchen, pull out the Bon Ami, and begin to clean because for some strange reason every time I scrub my kitchen I book a job.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
