He was the individual who had the most impact on my choosing to be an actor.<\/p>\n<p>In 1970, I auditioned for my first high school play: \u201c<em>Death of a Salesman<\/em>.\u201d It was to be directed by Brother Ted, a Christian Brother who was not only the wrestling coach and the school principal, but the sole director of the school plays and musicals.<\/p>\n[aesop_image force_fullwidth=&#8221;off&#8221; lightbox=&#8221;off&#8221; captionposition=&#8221;left&#8221; captionsrc=&#8221;custom&#8221; align=&#8221;center&#8221; imgwidth=&#8221;100%&#8221; img=&#8221;https:\/\/performingartslegacy.org\/fitzpatrickallen\/wp-content\/plugins\/editus\/public\/assets\/img\/empty-img.png&#8221; panorama=&#8221;off&#8221;]\n<p>We rehearsed for over six weeks but, alas, he ultimately canceled the production when he felt the seniors (playing the leads) were afflicted by \u201csenioritis\u201d and lacking in discipline. The following year he directed me in \u201cThe Music Man\u201d and \u201cMy Fair Lady.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ted was a simply extraordinary director. His understanding of stagecraft was enormous. The productions he mounted were superb; the quality was brilliant. His standards could not have been higher.<\/p>\n<p>Many years later, we reconnected through a fluke, and remained in close touch until his passing.<\/p>\n<p>If not for Ted\u2019s influence, I\u2019m not at all sure I\u2019d have pursued a career in theatre.
