{"id":266,"date":"2019-10-04T13:29:26","date_gmt":"2019-10-04T17:29:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/performingartslegacy.org\/irvinebarbara\/?p=266"},"modified":"2021-12-20T10:17:59","modified_gmt":"2021-12-20T15:17:59","slug":"boyd-vance-and-barbara-irvine-collaborators-on-alice-and-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/performingartslegacy.org\/irvinebarbara\/boyd-vance-and-barbara-irvine-collaborators-on-alice-and-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Boyd Vance and Barbara Irvine, Collaborators on \u2018Alice\u2019 and More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The fact that \u201cA\u2026 My Name Is Alice\u201d was the fourth show on which Boyd and I had collaborated precipitated an article about us, titled the same as this highlight, written by Diana Claitor for the Austin American-Statesman (March 12, 1987 issue).<\/p>\n<p>I believe that by the time I left Austin for NYC in 1988, Boyd and I had worked on nine productions together, including \u201cCabaret\u201d, \u201cEubie!\u201d, \u201cAin\u2019t Misbehavin\u2019\u201d, \u201cPurlie\u201d, \u201cYou\u2019re A Good Man, Charlie Brown\u201d, Jabberwocky Players, Esther\u2019s Follies, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Boyd and I first met when I stepped in to music direct a production of \u201cCabaret\u201d at the Gaslight Theatre, in which he was playing the Emcee. \u00a0Boyd\u2019s body was one-sided as a result of a severe burn injury he had sustained as a child. \u00a0The set designer for \u201cCabaret\u201d used this anomaly to inform his design, and everything was just a little off kilter. \u00a0It was a highly inventive production of the show, directed by Steve Wyman who, after not receiving tenure at The University of Texas, went to Hollywood and had great success in television directing.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boyd_Vance\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boyd Vance<\/a> is no longer with us, but our times together will always be in my heart. \u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legacy.com\/obituaries\/statesman\/obituary.aspx?n=Boyd-Vance&amp;pid=3398301\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boyd\u2019s obituary<\/a>.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The fact that \u201cA\u2026 My Name Is Alice\u201d was the fourth show on which Boyd and I had collaborated precipitated an article about us, titled the same as this highlight, written by Diana Claitor for the Austin American-Statesman (March 12, 1987 issue).
