{"id":325,"date":"2019-10-09T21:45:02","date_gmt":"2019-10-10T01:45:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/performingartslegacy.org\/irvinebarbara\/?p=325"},"modified":"2020-03-06T15:15:04","modified_gmt":"2020-03-06T20:15:04","slug":"alfreds-singers-library-of-musical-theatre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/performingartslegacy.org\/irvinebarbara\/alfreds-singers-library-of-musical-theatre\/","title":{"rendered":"Alfred\u2019s Singer\u2019s Library of Musical Theatre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just as a show can often take years to make it from the page to the stage, this series of books took years to make it from conception to publication. \u00a0Bill Galliford, of what was then Warner Chapell, requested a proposal from me in 2001 for a series of Broadway songbooks. \u00a0He knew of my work as a music director, vocal coach, etc. \u00a0I proposed that a series of books be created that included the following information about each song: vocal range; song type; character type; show, scene, and character information; era; sixteen-bar suggestions. Also, I proposed that all songs be in their original show keys and the piano parts be from the original scores. \u00a0The proposal was well received with some modifications.<\/p>\n<p>Originally, I thought I would be doing the engraving work for the songs, as well, but that was done by their in-house engraving department. \u00a0By the time they were ready to move forward with the books, Alfred Publishing had bought the Warner Chapell division for which Galliford worked. \u00a0In 2007, I was finally contracted to write the introduction and all the commentary for four books, Volume 1 (Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Tenor, and Bass) which came out in 2008. \u00a0My introduction was used for Volume 2, but the commentary was written by someone else. \u00a0In January of 2009, I was hired to record the accompaniment CDs for the books, but I had to return home because of my mother&#8217;s impending death. \u00a0My friend and colleague, Dennis Buck, completed the recordings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.halleonard.com\/search\/search.action?keywords=Alfred%27s%20Singer%27s%20Library&amp;dt=item&amp;sortBy=title#products\">Hal Leonard<\/a> has now taken over distribution of the books.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just as a show can often take years to make it from the page to the stage, this series of books took years to make it from conception to publication. \u00a0Bill Galliford, of what was then Warner Chapell, requested a proposal from me in 2001 for a series of Broadway songbooks. \u00a0He knew of my [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":177,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-325","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-highlight"],"metadata":{"_edit_lock":["1583525567:177"],"_edit_last":["177"],"_wpac_members_redirect_to":[""],"_wpac_show_in_search":["0"],"_wpac_show_excerpt_in_search":["0"],"_wpac_nonmembers_redirect_to":[""],"ase_map_component_start_point":["a:2:{s:3:\"lat\";d:29.76;s:3:\"lng\";d:-95.38;}"]},"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.6 -
