CHRISTMAS CAROL: 
\nScrooges<\/span> Over the Years<\/p>\n

Never having intended playing a trademark character in the
\ntradition of many famous actors, and even having primarily played old men since
\nI was 17 starting my on stage career, I never expected to repeatedly play
\nEbenezer Scrooge on stage across<\/span> America and in Europe.<\/p>\n

The first Scrooge<\/a> came to me as a producer\/director holding summer
\nstock auditions for the Showboat in Clinton, Iowa at SETC in Tampa, Florida. As
\na producer, I hobnobbed with other producers and as a result was offered my
\nfirst Scrooge by Carolyn Rutherford and Nebraska Theatre Caravan for their East
\nCoast Tour that played multiple dates in Pittsburgh, New Bedford<\/span>, New Haven,
\nand Baltimore and many, many more one night stands. I also received an offer
\nfor Derek Meadle in Simon Gray\u2019s Quartermaine\u2019s Terms at Arkansas Rep as a
\nresult of meeting Cliff Fanin Baker in Tampa.<\/p>\n

Scrooge #2 came with Everett Hoagland III\u2019s International
\nProduction & Performance, Brooklyn, NY. I had met Mr. Hoagland at the
\nValley Studio in Spring Green, WIS in 1974 during summer session that attracted
\nan international cast of teachers and students. For IP&P, I played Scrooge
\nand also Scottish Santa (along with 20 other \u201cInternational\u201d Santas) for the ChexMix
\n50th<\/sup> Anniversary Celebration in Bryant Park.<\/p>\n

Scrooge #3<\/a> you ask? Result of an open call in NYC, Jere Lee
\nHodgin, Mill Mt. Theatre, Roanoke, VA cast me in his original musical
\nadaptation (Music<\/span> & Lyrics by Milton Granger) of CHRISTMAS CAROL where I
\nactually flew along with Christmas Past (Shelley Zipadelli). The first musical
\nadaptation I did (others had incidental music and Christmas carols) with the
\ninstructions to \u201cnot sound like a screaming tenor\u201d on the screaming tenor
\nlines. \u201cTell me did they save, did they slave, did they sacrifice, and hew to
\nthe mark, make the clerk count each penny twice, and did they dim the lamp, brave
\nthe damp, keep the gruel thin, and walk everywhere, save the fare, keep their trousers trim
\nlike I did, like I fought and won, yet will none, hear my voice? No, their
\nnoses shine, see them raid the til, see them feed like swine, grunting out good
\nwill, Humbug!, Humbug! Humbug! Humbug! [A#] SPOKEN: Gentlemen you keep
\nChristmas in your own way, and, let me keep it in mine. SUNG: Then we can all

Scrooge #4<\/a> Seth Reines, who I had first worked with at
\nWilson St East Dinner<\/span> Playhouse, Madison, WIS in 1976, cast me as Scrooge in
\nLittle Theatre on the Square\u2019s first stab at a Christmas show having finally
\nput a proper furnace in the building.  The script? Doris Baizley\u2019s Mark Taper Forum version of Christmas Carol with a cast of nine. Premise: A late 19th<\/sup> century touring company has their
\nScrooge and Tiny Tim go AWOL and the stage manager and prop boy must take over
\nthe roles so the show can go on. And, the Crachit children are played by sock
\npuppets. Performances were added as the ticket demand was heavy for this charming,
\nsmall scale production.<\/p>\n

 Scrooge #5<\/a> American Drama Group, Munich, Germany sought a <\/span>replacement for their Scrooge of many years, and, cast me. Rehearsing in NYC <\/span>and starting in Munich for a November \u2013 December, five country tour<\/span>, we played Christmas <\/span>Carol in English with a cast of eight for audiences in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, <\/span>Germany and Switzerland.  Oslo, Berlin [4 <\/span>days] and Leipzig were my favorite stops with much Gluhwein and many continental <\/span>breakfasts consumed along the way.<\/span><\/p>\n

Scrooge #6<\/a> Little Theatre on the Square again, but with the
\nSheldon Harnick \/ Michel LeGrand musical large cast version this time with many
\nchildren and townspeople in the cast. Shawn Pryby directed. A great deal of \u201cWindmills
\nof Your Mind\u201d inflected music in the score, and a turntable set, and light up
\ngravestones highlighted the show.<\/p>\n

Scrooge #7<\/a> Smith Street Stage, Brooklyn, NY A radio play
\ndone in radio studio style with live audience and sound effects. Jonathan
\nHopkins and Beth Ann Hopkins produce and direct in the Carroll Park Fieldhouse.<\/p>\n

Scrooge #8<\/a> Scrooge<\/span> and Marley\u2019s Christmas, special video
\nproject, a hipster contemporary version of the counting house scene, filmed in
\nresale shop in Queens. Johnny Pruit, my Tiny Tim from the 2007 LTOTS Christmas
\nCarol, wrote the adaptation and directed and played Bob Crachit.<\/p>\n
