{"id":271,"date":"2021-11-01T19:34:07","date_gmt":"2021-11-01T23:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/performingartslegacy.org\/schultzeric\/?p=271"},"modified":"2022-01-05T11:38:27","modified_gmt":"2022-01-05T16:38:27","slug":"getting-lost-in-the-white-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/performingartslegacy.org\/schultzeric\/getting-lost-in-the-white-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting Lost in the White House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While we were doing \u201cInto the Woods\u201d, Richard Nelson asked me to become a partner to market the tracking software that he and Eric Cornwell had created and to do architectural lighting.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So he and I and Tina Charney, another lighting designer, formed Lucida Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>In architectural lighting the job to proposal ratio is very low; I imagine somewhat akin to an actor\u2019s job to audition ratio, but the research can be interesting.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We worked on a proposal to re-light the fa\u00e7ade of the Paramount building in Times Square.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This involved Richard and I taking photographs and measurements by going out on to the parapets and setbacks, getting into the clock tower, and climbing into the 19\u2019 diameter g<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">lass globe atop the building.<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Nothing came of that research other than a unique NY adventure.<\/span><\/p>\n[aesop_gallery transition=&#8221;crossfade&#8221; galleryType=&#8221;grid&#8221; id=&#8221;282&#8243;]\n<p>One job we did get was lighting th<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">e exhibition spaces of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.<\/span><span style=\"color: #444444; font-family: Lato, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 0.9rem; font-weight: bold; text-align: center;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">The interior design firm was Donovan\/Green.<\/span><span style=\"color: #444444; font-family: Lato, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 0.9rem; font-weight: bold; text-align: center;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Nancy Green was concerned about the look outside the windows of the Oval Office replica.<\/span><span style=\"color: #444444; font-family: Lato, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 0.9rem; font-weight: bold; text-align: center;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Most presidential libraries try realistic presentations that don\u2019t work very well.<\/span><span style=\"color: #444444; font-family: Lato, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 0.9rem; font-weight: bold; text-align: center;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Richard suggested having Doug Schmidt, a theatrical scenic designer,<\/span><span style=\"color: #444444; font-family: Lato, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 0.9rem; font-weight: bold; text-align: center;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">create a theatrical cyclorama that we could light with theatrical equipment \u2013 this would also exempt that lighting from the strict California energy codes.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-image wp-caption lasso-component\" data-component-type=\"wpimg\" data-img=\"https:\/\/performingartslegacy.org\/schultzeric\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/12\/1280px-White_House_DC-300x181.jpg\" data-imgwidth=\"\" data-imgheight=\"\" data-linkoption=\"\" data-link=\"\" data-alt=\"\" data-caption=\"White House Creative Commons\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/performingartslegacy.org\/schultzeric\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/12\/1280px-White_House_DC-300x181.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">White House Creative Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To research this, Allen Wilpon from Donovan\/Green and I traveled to Washington to see the real Oval Office.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>After going through the security gate, the guard directed us to head up the path and go through the French doors.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When we got closer it appeared the whole front of the White House was made of French doors.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We picked one and ended up in a basement service area.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>After several minutes of being lost, someone asked if we needed help and escorted us upstairs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Secret Service agent on duty outside the Oval Office took us into the empty room.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We asked him if we could go outside to look at the trees and shrubs outside the windows \u2013 he said yes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We asked if we could take pictures \u2013 again he said yes but added \u2018just don\u2019t take any that might show the thickness of the protective glass behind the desk\u2019.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We agreed and he left us alone.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We went outside to look at the foliage, went back inside, took lots of photos for Doug and Richard, all unescorted.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It seemed strange but maybe working on Ronald Reagan\u2019s Library brought certain privileges.<\/p>\n[aesop_gallery pslightbox=&#8221;on&#8221;
