This story depends on your remembering that my name is
\n\u201cJennifer Sherron Stock.<\/span><\/p>\n

Back in 1971, I was excited to get my first Equity job on my
\nvery first Equity audition.  My friends
\nhad told me that some Equity summer stock companies had open calls (meaning you
\ncould audition even if you were not a union member).  They urged me to go, and although I
\nhesitated, I finally gave in and went with them.  The casting process went by in a blur.  We auditioned in the old Showcase Studios \u2013
\nwhich was located at 57th<\/sup> and 8th<\/sup> Avenues, where a less
\nthan attractive apartment building now stands. 
\nIt was an open chorus call, and both the director\/choreographer, Steven
\nBaum and the music director Chuck Jones were present \u2013 a treat you don\u2019t often
\nget nowadays \u2013 when a second assistant casting director often hears your
\naudition.  We sang, and we were excited
\nto be called back the same day.  After
\nthe callback several of us were offered contracts on the spot.  It was exciting but unexpected.  I asked my friends what to do and they
\nsaid,\u201dsign, sign, you never know when you will be offered an AEA contract again,
\n\u201d (these were the days before you could \u201cbuy in\u201d to the union) so, I did.<\/p>\n

After the signing we were told we could go right down to the
\nunion and file our contracts in person \u2013 it was a mere 10 blocks away.  My friend Carol Nissenson and I arrived at
\nActor\u2019s Equity, and we were directed to the contract filing department.  A tall elderly gentleman beckoned me up to
\nthe counter.  As I stepped forward he
\nsaid, \u201cstock.\u201d  I replied, \u201chow did you
\nknow my name?\u201d  He burst out into gales
\nof laughter \u2013 of course he did not know or mean my name, but was asking if it
\nwas a \u201cstock contract.\u201d  The gentleman\u2019s
\nname was Walter Reimer, and I understand (till the day he retired) he never got
\ntired of telling that story to friends and colleagues, and laughing at my
\nnaivete all over again.  Wow, what a
\ngreenhorn I was.  But being young and
\nna\u00efve \u2013 what a special time of life that is and I myself can smile at the young
\nme filing my very first Equity contract.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
