{"id":124,"date":"2018-03-26T16:44:04","date_gmt":"2018-03-26T20:44:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/performingartslegacy.org\/stockwoman1\/?p=124"},"modified":"2018-03-26T16:44:04","modified_gmt":"2018-03-26T20:44:04","slug":"whos-that-singing-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/performingartslegacy.org\/stockwoman1\/whos-that-singing-now\/","title":{"rendered":"Who\u2019s That Singing Now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>I was a born singer, could practically sing before I<br \/>\nspoke, so back in the 1970\u2019s I frequently was cast in singing chorus of many<br \/>\nlegit musicals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>One such job was singing in a production of THE MERRY<br \/>\nWIDOW starring the famous Metropolitan Opera star, Roberta Peters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>One day the Jonathan Dudley, the music<br \/>\ndirector\/conductor asked, \u201ccan anyone here sing a high \u201cD\u201d?&nbsp; For me it was no problem, I had a high \u201cD\u201d<br \/>\nand then some in my back pocket.&nbsp; So I<br \/>\nnaturally said yes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>The conductor then took me aside and said, Miss Peters<br \/>\nis looking for someone to sing her final High \u201cD\u201ds in the matinee performances,<br \/>\nso she can save her voice for the evening show.&nbsp;<br \/>\nI agreed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>The deal was, everyone was supposed to point to Miss<br \/>\nPeters at stage center, (including myself) to make her the center of focus and<br \/>\nmake it appear that it was she singing the high note at the end of the finale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>All went well the first couple of matinees, and Miss<br \/>\nPeters was pleased with my assistance in the little deception.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>I bet you can guess what came next.&nbsp; About the third time (three\u2019s a charm,<br \/>\nright), like any real singer exhilarated with their performance, the high note<br \/>\nsoared out of me and I forgot to point to Miss Peters, but stepped down in one<br \/>\nwith my arms stretched out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>The rest of the chorus ribbed me about it.&nbsp; I did not even realize that the diva instinct<br \/>\nhad overtaken me.&nbsp; I was worried about<br \/>\nreprimand, after all she was a big star.&nbsp;<br \/>\nNo censure ever came. Maestro Dudley simply informed me that my \u201cHigh<br \/>\nNote Services\u201d were no longer needed.&nbsp;<br \/>\nBut the long and short of the story is that Miss Peters sang her own<br \/>\nHigh \u201cD\u201ds from that day forward.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was a born singer, could practically sing before I spoke, so back in the 1970\u2019s I frequently was cast in singing chorus of many legit musicals.
