Kim’s role dominates Ibsen’s polemic against the tyranny of the majority. The most effective scene finds Stockmann confronted by an angry crowd of residents of his hometown. Standing alone, he dares to defend the viewpoint that the mass, made up of the stupid and the mindless, is to blame for the corruption of the world because it hold sway over the few who have discovered the truth. Kim gives the long homily great variety, mixing anger and forcefulness with ironic humor….”
