Review Excerpts

“’’RICHARD II,’ INEVITABLE IMPASSE’….One of the problems in playing ‘Richard II’ is to keep him from being an esthete or a coward.…Randall Duk Kim’s Richard earns our empathy…. In Mr. Kim’s sensitive, manly portrayal, Richard rises in our esteem and affection; we regret that poets can not be kings….The principle reason for seeing this ‘Richard’ is Mr. Kim, a continually expanding actor (he has played contemporary comedy at the American Place Theater and the title role in ‘Pericles’ for the New York Shakespeare Festival).…As for the adventurous Mr. Kim, if there is any limit to his talent as an actor. It has not yet been demonstrated.”

“The title role of ‘King Richard II’…foreshadowed Shakespeare’s greatest character, Hamlet….both sensitive men, possessed of an imaginative strain, strong intellect and great eloquence…. Randall Duk Kim, who plays Richard, is an actor who is sensitive to the nuances of his character…. Shakespeare drew a picture of a complex man, subject to extremes of emotion and indecision. Kim is an intelligent and impassioned actor….. He poignantly captures the humiliation of a king who knows he has lost the right to rule but can still hope for divine intervention to save his throne….”
