I auditioned for a Gillette commercial, and was then hired to do a demo for it. Having done many demos in the past, I have come to understand that sometimes the demos lead to final spots and sometimes they lead nowhere, or they go in another direction or with another voice actor. I recorded this demo and then forgot about it- I was not recording to video or what seemed like a final spot. So I had no idea if this was anything that would run, or was just something being presented to the ad agency for approval. I left the session, grateful for the day’s work.
Fast forward a few month later, and a Facebook friend of mine posted this ad- which was on the coat tails of the “Me Too” movement. As I was listening to it, I heard something that sounded… familiar. It was my voice, in several places as one of the newscasters. The ad had not only been approved and gone final, as it started to run, it also caused quite a controversy~ Apparently some people were offended by it (See the second link). I happened to think it was a great ad, and one with a message that needed to be addressed. It’s not often that one does an ad that makes such waves or stirs such political conversation- This was a first for me.
