I can still see him standing there at the foot of the stairs to the stage of the Palace Theatre. His eyes speaking warm sincerity as he introduced himself as one of the producers of La Cage. I don’t remember his exact words or what silly thing I might have said in reply. But I’ll never forget the moment Fritz Holt invited me to be part of the La Cage family.
Fritz began his career as a stage manager at Mineola Playhouse in New York. After working with Hal Prince, producing a series of flops, he landed on top with the Tony winning La Cage Aux Folles.
In 1983 he directed two benefit performances: Best of the Best, an all star benefit for AIDS victims at Metropolitan Opera in New York and Happy Birthday Mr. Abbott, George Abbott’s hundredth birthday celebration for The Actors Fund. He was also a main contributor along with Reverend Mead Miner Bailey in establishing Bailey-Holt House, providing housing and support for those suffering from HIV/AIDS in New York City.
That infectious grin, his caring heart, his amazing talent – Fritz Holt. The best.
