KDKA Radio is the voice of Pittsburgh. Dad listens to KDKA every morning.

Can you imagine the excitement when Sister Mary Immaculate, the principal of St Bernard’s School, announces that Paul Shannon is coming to our school, not for just  a day, but the whole spring semester. He’s going to teach a speech class to the 8th grade students. How great is this!

Paul Shannon

After giving the time, the weather report, traffic alerts, sports scores and what’s happening in Pittsburgh today, Paul does his own show, ‘Dream Weaver’. He’s here, in person, in our classroom. His energetic spirit opens up a whole new world of endless possibilities

Every student is going prepare a speech and the student who gives the best speech will win a prize.

First, choose a subject. Something you like and know a lot about. Rosy Rosewell and Bob Prince broadcast the Pirate games on KDKA radio. We go to Forbes Field to see the games. We are a baseball family. I choose baseball. My favorite team is The New York Yankees… Whitey Ford, Yogi Beri, Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth. The Babe Ruth Story, with William Bendix is playing at the South Hills Theater. I’ve seen it twice. Paul tells us to research our subject. I read the sports page of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Think about your story.

Write down key words, not sentences.

Key words remind you of your story.

You are going to tell your story, not read it.

Practice, practice, then practice again and again.

Dad’s a good audience.

It’s exciting standing in front of my classmates telling Pirate fans about the New York Yankees. It’s exciting standing next to Paul Shannon. It’s exciting to win the Speech Medal.

Dad’s proud.
