“Come sit down, tell me how your day is going.”
Not the usual greeting you hear at an audition, but then Rosetta Le Noire is not the usual producer. It’s something you can’t explain. Some people bring happiness with them wherever they go. That’s Rosetta.
AMAS is Latin for ‘you love’ and love is what Rosetta is all about, and the name of her Musical Theatre Company. I’m auditioning for Madge Wallace, Harry Truman’s mother-in-law, in The Buck Stops Here.
I sit at the table with Rosetta and we talk…talk about the creative arts and how they bring people together. One reason I want to work in theater is the opportunity of being with people of all ages, personalities, races, cultures, shapes and sizes. It’s a university of human experience.
Then Rosetta tells me a story about Eubie Blake – her mentor. He advised her:
Look at the flowers in that yard.
Why are they beautiful?
Roses, Iris, Tulips, all different colors.
Look again what do they have in common?
They all have green stems.
People are like flowers.
They are different, but the same.
We are God’s flowers and God didn’t want just one kind of flower.
He wanted a bouquet.
What kind of flower do you want to be?
Rosetta smiles: “What are you going to sing for me today?”
