This was my first time directing a cabaret show. It was a one-woman show by Valerie Charles starring her alter-ego character, Duanne. I would wind up directing four Duanne shows at other cabaret spots around NYC.

The character was a simple, seemingly hapless young woman, who ultimately won you over with her humorous exploits and her sweetness, never saccharine, always endearing. The writing was always terrific and in sync with the character, and so it was always easy and fun working with Valerie.

“Duanne’s Christmas Party” was about a Christmas party Duanne gives and as she prepares for it she calls a call-in show a few times, and talks with the DJ, and makes song requests. As time goes by, no one comes and she wonders where everyone is, and the evening becomes fraught with emotion, until she realizes it’s the wrong night, and she, and you, cheer right up. Surprisingly emotional but really fun, and funny, too, with a lot of Christmas carols.

The whole show was a microphone, an actress, and a boombox. Great time, great show.
