This show, “Miss Evers’ Boys,” was probably the most difficult show I’ve ever directed. It involved threats from one member of the cast toward another cast member because of that cast member’s behavior, and the threats were made in front of the rest of the cast. I had to defuse the situation, get my producer, the Artistic Director, involved, and get the one cast member to apologize to the other, and then finish putting the show up.

The play is a horrifying account of the results of not treating a group of black men who have syphillis with the new drug penicillin, and “treating” them with what was available then, and recording what happened to the men over the years. It was a difficult subject matter but a terrific script.

The set design of the show was one of the best that I’ve had, and, along with the lighting design, gave the show a haunting look that drew raves.

The cast and the production team were topnotch.

I wound up getting a Best Director award from the area newspapers and media. Go figure.

So, no matter what happens, as Shakespeare says, the play’s the thing…
